Everything You Need to Know About Motorcycle Laws | Attorney Javier Marcos

Motorcycle Laws | Attorney Javier Marcos | 713.999.4444

Although generally speaking, a person riding a motorcycle should be following all the road laws that other vehicles have to follow. They have to follow a few additional rules that are only applicable to motorcycles. The reason behind this is that motorcycles are generally not as safe as other vehicles. And are more prone to getting into accidents and other fatal incidents. So if you like to ride a bike, it would be a good idea to be aware of the motorcycle laws.

Motorcycle Laws

  • Licensing

In most states, you can’t just drive a motorcycle if you have a driver’s license. These states require a separate endorsement on the license which legally allow the individual to operate a motorcycle. Most bike-riders are unaware of this law and drive a motorcycle anyway on a daily basis. Not realizing they are consistently breaking the law.

Problems arise if these people get into an accident. Not having the legal permission to drive a motorcycle means that the bike-rider could be blamed for the accident. Even if it was entirely the other vehicle’s fault. So research the motorcycle laws of the state you are driving a motorcycle in. And go through the procedure to get a legal approval if you don’t have it already.

  • Safety Gears

No matter which part of the world you are living in, the requirement for safety gears to ride a motorcycle are much more than any other vehicle around. Almost all states require one to wear a helmet at all times when on a motorcycle. Even the few who don’t mandate a helmet require you to wear some sort of eye-protection.

Some states also require bike riders to wear specific types of footwear, padded or armored clothing, or reflective vests. So again, it would be a good idea to look up the motorcycle laws in your state to get better information on what you need to wear.

  • Bike Equipment

It is a requirement of both state and federal laws that certain lights be used on motorcycles at all times. These include brake lights, turn signals and headlights that should always be on.

Failure to follow any of the above laws and rules can not only endanger the life of the bike-rider. But also the people around them and can cause serious legal trouble if one gets into an accident.

Although there have been laws put into practice in recent times to provide more safety to bike riders and make the other vehicle drivers aware of these safety measures. The effectiveness of these laws is still not up to the mark.

So until the roads become a safer place for motorcycles. It is better that the riders be aware of the laws themselves and make sure they are following all the safety precautions and laws put in place for them.
