On September first of 2017, the law SB4 was going to begin taking place. This law permits local authorities or police officers to check documents when involved in a car accident. The judge Orlando Garcia, from San Antonio, blocked for a while and a big part of the law SB4. He is also looking to eliminate sanctuary policies in Texas.
This is a temporary victory, a victory in the first legislative step. This means that the police and universities will not give your immigration status to ICE or Immigration and Customs Enforcement without being fired. It also means that people without documents cannot be detained unless ICE has a federal order.
“This is a big victory for us, but is the first step in this long fight for the rights of our Community in Texas” said the president of LULAC Roger C. Rocha.
“As a result, this provisions will not go in effect on september 1,” said Nina Perales, vicepresident of MALDEF.
