Driving in Floodwater: how to avoid floodwater and what does water damage do to cars

Driving in floodwater | Attorney Javier Marcos | 713.999.4444

The dangers of driving in floodwater rain doesn’t seem a big deal, but streets can become deadly in a matter of minutes if floodwater rises. The CDC, or “Center for Disease Control and Prevention” states that each year, there are more deaths due to flooding that any other hazard related to thunderstorms. Houston flooding is no joke. You have to do something or take steps to protect your family and yourself from driving in floodwater.

What is a floodwater?

A flood is a large amount of water beyond its normal confines, especially over what is normally dry land. Floodwater is caused by heavy rains, overflowing rivers, broken dams, storms and lots of rain. The impact of flooding can cause property damage or even loss of human life.

Fox news states that “More than 500,000 cars are estimated to have been flooded during Harvey, and incredibly some of them may end up in an online ad or a car lot near you.”

What does water damage do to cars?

Depending on how much water entered your car, flooding can lead to trouble with the engine, electrical system, airbags or other major car components. Minor flooding can lead to rust, mold and other issues.

If your car was flooded, wait until the water resides and do not try to start the car, disconnect the battery, roll down the windows, check engine oil, check fuel system, etc. Best way is to call a tow truck and take it to the auto repair shop.

Does car insurance cover flooding?

Depending on your plan, the car may or may not be covered by insurance. If you have liability insurance, it will only cover injuries or damages to other drivers, not your own car. Liability insurance is usually cheaper because it only covers the other car involved in a car accident.

Attorney Javier Marcos always recommends getting full coverage or comprehensive insurance for you car insurance. Because it covers you and the other side in case of auto accidents, injuries or even floods. If you have full coverage, it will cover flood damage no matter which auto insurance company you choose: Allstate, Progressive, etc. And can be purchased through local insurance agents.

Tips to avoid driving in floodwater

The CDC states  “Try to avoid driving through flooding areas and standing water.  As little as six inches of water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle.” It only takes a foot of water or 12 inches to float most cars. And rushing floodwater can carry you downstream.

Here are some tips to avoid driving in floodwater:

  1. Drive slowly, take your time to get to your destination.
  2. If you see a street that has more than 6in do not drive through it.
  3. Watch for signs of downed power lines.
  4. Turn around, don’t drown.
  5. Look for barricades. Don’t try to drive around them.
  6. Park your car in elevated areas.
  7. Do not leave your car in flood prone areas.
  8. Look for high water spots and avoid them.

Before heading out for a drive, watch the news. They are always informing the community about the possibility of any flash floods, heavy rain, storms, hurricanes, highway and road flooding. It is always best to be informed of the weather.
