Food Delivery Accidents | Riders Causing Unsafe Roads | Attorney Javier Marcos

Food delivery accidents | Attorney Javier Marcos | 713.999.4444

Over the years, food delivery to home has become increasingly common. Every day you see tons of riders on their bikes or cycles with mini delivery bags on their backs. Rushing to get the order to the address as soon as possible. And unfortunately, food delivery accidents are becoming more common.

In fact, it has become so common that apps like UberEats and Grubhub are some of the most successful apps around. Because people are using them so much. It is just so convenient to touch your mobile screen a few times. And have food delivered to your doors step within minutes!

But this convenience hasn’t come without its fair share of issues.

Road accidents and Food delivery

As the demand for such deliveries has increased. Road accidents related to food delivery riders have also taken a hike. In fact, some motorcycles, scooters and even bicycles have been endangering pedestrians and road users by infringing traffic and parking rules in order to deliver their orders on time.

However, this isn’t entirely the fault of these riders. Yes, it is their duty to follow the road rules; but this issue goes deeper than that.

Most of these riders are people who are trying to make ends meet by with as much extra money as they can earn. Generally, they take up food delivery services as a part-time job, and aren’t actually trained for the services.

These apps also hire people without any former training or any relevant background. Basically if you have a bike or a scooter, you are good to go.

Since the money they earn depends on the number of orders they are able to deliver per day instead of monthly wages. These riders tend to not pay heed to traffic rules in order to deliver as many orders as possible. This means they tend to go over the speed limit or even break signals.

Not only is this harmful for the people who come across these riders, it can also risk the rider’s own life. Almost every food delivery rider has an awful story to tell when they met with a bad accident.

So like most issues, this one also needs to be targeted at the root.

What can be done

In order to get these riders to respect road rules, there needs to be a serious training and a licensing process before hiring them. They need to undergo all the road rules again and understand the responsibility of following these rules when one is driving for a living.

Since at the end of the day, it is more about their own safety as compared to the civilians, they need to be thoroughly aware of the situation.

The wage system should also be improved. Paying the riders the amount of peanuts per delivery will only make them more and more reckless to earn extra over time. So there needs to be an increase in wage and a limit to how many deliveries one can make per day.

If food delivery companies start to take these things into account and start accommodating these riders, road accidents related to food delivery riders will surely decrease overtime.
